This week Jennifer and I put on our Sorels and went into nature. We went to the Taekbaeksan Snow Festival, in Gangwando. Every year, there is a snow festival boasting large snow sculpture and hiking in the mountains. We went with Goh Tours and really enjoyed our time on the mountain.
The snow sculptures are quite large and depict elements of Korean culture, ranging from buildings to animation characters. This year, there were also some sculptures highlighting the upcoming Olympics.
We arrived around 12:30 pm and first decided to check out the igloo. Inside, there are several tables made completely out of ice, and there are also decorative lights lining the interior. It’s really a neat experience. There were several people inside walking around, taking photos or just enjoying coffee at the ice tables.
You can also go hiking on the mountain, which we did for a short period of time. The snow trails are really pretty but there are just so many people that we were a little put off. Instead, what we did, what we do best… we adventured beyond the trail to play in the snow and take some photos.
We explored for about an hour before we went back to the festival and enjoyed the large snow sculptures. There is also live music and food. You can see several Koreans dancing in the middle of the festival and the atmosphere is really fun. There are several people milling about taking photos next to the sculptures.
After we finished with the sculptures we went to a cute little cafe next to the festival. The cafe reminded me of a cabin in the woods. We enjoyed some tea and warmed up before getting back on the bus to return to Seoul.
