If you know anything about Korea you know that style and fashion is kind of a big deal.

I’ve been living in Seoul for 5 years now and you can see that style is everywhere. Koreans take a great deal of pride in their appearance and everyone is always dressed extremely well. In fact, many Asian countries look to Korea as a leader in fashion. One of the areas Korea dominates in in terms of fashion is street style which I believe will become even more important in the years to come.

This past week was Seoul Fashion week. I have been several times and my first year here I was lucky enough to be able to shoot on the runway with the house photographer. That was a pretty awesome experience. However, over the past few years I have actually determined that I prefer to be shooting outside.

Shooting on the runway is kind of cool, but it’s not really the common fashion that you see everyday people wearing. This year I had access to a press pass, but I opted to shoot around the outside of the DDP (where Seoul Fashion Week is held) for a few different reasons.

Since Korea is known for street fashion, I thought it would be better to connect with and photograph people who represent the style of normal people.

Let me tell you, they kill it in every respect.

Models, fashionistas, stylists, makeup artists, writers, bloggers and photographers all flock to the DDP. What ensues is a bit of chaos, and a great deal of fun. You get to connect with people from all over the world and see all kinds of different looks and styles.

I dedicated Saturday to shooting and I came away with over 1000 useable photos, and tons of connections. I got featured in a couple of online magazines and even couple of jobs out of it, so the R.O.I is worth the long day. It’s a great experience for everyone in that industry.

After Fashion Week officially ended there are several parties you can attend. I stayed at the DDP a little longer and enjoyed the music and dancing. The event is an investment. After shooting and networking for so long you end up exhausted, but the ROI is worth is and it’s just fun being in the action and seeing all the amazing styles.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them below and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
